September

RDRN invites the public to share in our field trips. There is no charge to take part other than to share carpool expenses. Cars will have a full gas tank on departure and will be refilled on return. Passengers, not the driver, will share the cost of the gas plus two dollars per person for car expenses. Always come prepared for Alberta weather. It is important that you phone the contact person at least two days in advance for details. Pets are not permitted on RDRN trips.

We carpool to local points of interest.
Meet at 12:00 noon at Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Red Deer

Friday - Sunday, September 10 - 12: Alberta Parks Volunteer Conference: Out of Sherwood Park, takes in the Cooking Lake Moraine.
Sunday, September 12: Medicine River Wildlife Centre Open House: 12:00 -  5:00 p.m. Come behind the scenes at the hospital. Admission be donation. Call (403) 728-3467 for information.
Wednesday, September 15: Flower Focus

Everyone Loves and Orchid.

Please bring your dissection tools and flora. We will dissect an orchid and look at a powerpoint of the Orchids of Alberta.

Friday - Sunday, September 17 - 19: Buffalo Lake Naturalists Big Knife Provincial Park Campout: (Sunday noon picnic. 1:00 p.m. Nature Walk) Phone Mark (403) 742-5191 for information.
Saturday - Sunday, September 18 - 19: Lichens/Fungi/Mosses Workshop: A two day workshop to learn about lichens, fungi, and mosses at Medicine River Wildlife Centre and Myrna Pearman's property near Rimbey. A recognized lichenologist, mycologist, and bryologist will conduct the workshop.
COurse will be conducted by three experts in the filed of mycology.
Admission by $20 pre-registration only.

Speaker: Ed Struzik speaking about the Arctic

Ed Struzik is an award-winning writer/photographer whose work has appeared in various journals, magazines and newspapers such as Canadian Geographic, Equinox, Yale 360 Environment, Foreign Policy Review, Geo, Report on Business, and newspapers like the Toronto Star, Edmonton Journal and Globe and Mail. He is author of the book Northwest Passage, published by Key Porter Books and the Canadian Geographic Society and Ten Rivers, published by CanWest Books and  “The Big Thaw” which was published in April 2009 by John Wiley and Sons and named the best book in science for a general audience by the Canadian Science Writers Association.

Ed is the recipient of more than 35 national and international awards and fellowships. In addition to the $100,000 Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy, he was the recipient of the Knight Science Fellowship at Harvard and MIT, the Southam Fellowship at the University of Toronto and most recently, the $35,000 Michener Deacon Fellowship. A nine time winner of the Canadian Science Writers Association Science in Society journalism award and a finalist for the $75,000 Grantham Prize, Ed is also the recipient of the Sir Sandford Fleming Medal, which goes to one Canadian each year who has made an outstanding contribution to the understand of science in Canada.

In May 2009, Queen’s University made Ed a fellow at the School of Public Policy Studies, Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy.
